BONNIE COHEN’S ART SELECTED AS “BEST ARCHITECTURAL MOSAIC”

FOR THE 2021 INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY MOSAIC ART

 

The Society of American Mosaic Art (SAMA) has selected the work of Bonnie Cohen, of Akron, Ohio as Best Architectural Mosaic for the 2021 Mosaic Arts International Exhibition. This competitive annual exhibition features innovative design and masterful technique as explored by some of the best international artists working in the medium.  

Fifty-four total works were selected including works from artists from throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, Greece, Spain and the United Kingdom.  The fully interactive exhibition can be viewed at https://mosaicartsinternational.americanmosaics.org/2021arch/bonnie-cohen/

The series is comprised of separate juried exhibits featuring the best in contemporary fine art, architectural, community, & site-specific mosaics from SAMA's diverse international membership.

Bonnie Cohen’s artwork titled “CONNECT” was commissioned and funded by Cleveland State University and the Ohio Percent for Art Program. following a competitive national search by the Ohio Arts Council, and the CSU College of Engineering committee.

 

The 55 ft. x 8 ft. mosaic installation is in the lobby of the Washkewicz College of Engineering and took 18 months to complete. It includes over 80,000 pieces of glass, and laser cut steel made in Cleveland.

 

​​Cohen’s design, titled “C​ONNECT” ​ ​​illustrates the idea that engineers improve people’s lives by connecting​ ​​people, concepts, materials, energy, formulas, patterns, and systems. The simple but powerful geometric design includes seven monumental letters which evoke the intersection of math, science, and art.

Cohen’s award-winning commissions enhance public spaces throughout the United States. This project was funded through the “Ohio Arts Council Percent for Arts Program” is Cohen’s fourth “Percent for Arts” commission in Ohio.
